Requirements to meet

Data conversion of legacy application data from decommissioned application to new Commercial off the Shelf application.

Issues to tackle

Legacy data resides in MS Excel. Must be loaded into new application (Oracle 8.x RDBMS) via predefined API tables. API tables were tightly controlled for formatting and data types. Error messages were inconsistent.

Approach taken

Exported table structures from API tables into Excel with SQL-XL, which provided excellent templates into which I could copy the data to be converted. Then, using templates and loaded multiple records into the Oracle tables.

Results

Good performance, nice error handling, satisfied customer.
