Fedora virtual machine

Fedora virtual machine

It is possible to download a fully working Fedora virtual machine from
http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/vmware/

I chose to use the Fedora 12 (Constantine), standard install
64-bit: fedora-12-x86_64.zip, 1,1 GB, 3.49 GB unzipped

Installation:
  • Unzip the downloaded file
  • Double click the vmx file to load the file into vmware

If you do not have vmware yet, you can obtain the vmware player for free from www.vmware.com.

Fedora: yum cannot retrieve repository metadata

Fedora: yum cannot retrieve repository metadata

Upon using yum for the first time to install software, the following message was displayed:

Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora.
Please verify its path and try again

    Solution:
The problem seems to be with https entries in the repo files. Changing them to http works.
  • The yum repo files are located in /etc/yum.repos.d
  • Edit the files fedora.repo and fedora-updates.repo. Replace all instances of https with http.

    Fedora: installing vmware tools

    Fedora: installing vmware tools

Vmware tools is a set of tools that makes it easier to work with the operating system as a virtual machine. Notably a mouse driver is installed that allows moving into and out of the vm. Also a screen driver is installed that allows for resizing of the vm window while adjusting the resolution automatically.

I following the procedure below to achieve the task. I must admit having done this three times where the first two attempts screwed up the vm. It would not boot anymore. The problems I had were with linking into the kernel. I noticed that you can actually skip that part. It renders a vm with the mouse and screen driver as required.

  • Run the install tools command from vmware
  • It mounts a cd drive with the required software
  • Copy the tar.gz file onto a temporary drive
  • In a terminal window, unzip and untar the file:
    gunzip *gz
    tar -xvf *tar
  • The uncompressed folder contains a installation pl file which needs to be run as root
    su root
    ./install.pl
  • Follow the procedure and at the point where it asks for the path to the kernel headers, do not give a path, just leave the empty default ('').
