Intersystem crossing
Intersystem crossing is the radiationless transition betwee two electronic states of different multiplicities.
When a singlet state nonradiatively transitions (upon excitation?) to a triplet state, that process is known as intersystem crossing. In essence, the spin of the excited electron is reversed.
The probability of this to occur depends on:
  • the overlap of the vibrational levels so no little to no energy is gained or lost int he proces
  • the spin-orbit coupling
