Mass number

Mass number = A = atomic mass number = nucleon number = the number of protons + neutrons in the nucleus.

Unlike the atomic number Z, the mass number A is different for each isotope of the atom.

The mass number is commonly written either after the element name or as a superscript to the left of an element's symbol. e.g. 12C
