VB6: Could not create reference: OCA

Occasionally Visual Basic 6 can give this message when opening a project:

Could not create reference: 'c:\windows\system32\*.oca'

These oca references sneak into the project and it can give problems when coding on the project on different computers where the exact oca could not be found.

In my case it is the mscomclt.oca file that causes the problem. It is associated to the mscomclt.ocx file.

In the project file the following reference was added by VB:
Reference=*\G{E7B57FE4-2164-48C0-9668-5FCCC5B0DD2A}#2.0#0#C:\WINDOWS\system32\ms
comctl.oca#Microsoft Windows Common Controls 6.0 (SP4)

Deleting this line solves the problem. You can open the vbp file in notepad and edit it. Please note that you should make a backup of your vpb before editing the file in notepad.
