Broken references in Excel workbooks

Sometimes by copying and pasting informatoin from one spreadsheet into another a link is created between the documents. If both documents remain to exist no problem happens (apart from having the unwanted link silently). However when you move the document  you copied from problems may start to happen when you open the workbook you copied the information to. It will prompt for the document that Excel now cannot locate.

Quite often these problems happen when the source data you copied referred to a name in that workbook. In the workbook you pasted the information the name will also be created and hence the link to the workbook is created.

The problem can easily be fixed by going to Insert-Name-Define. Select each name in the list and observe where the name refers to. Likely you find an entry like this:
=Sheet1!#REF!

When you remove the name the problem will be fixed. Before deleting the name, check that the name is not used in the spreadsheet anywhere.
