A polaron is a quasiparticle. It is composed of a charge and its accompanying polarization field.
The polarization field can be seen as follows:
When a slow moving electron moves through a dielectric crystal it interacts with the lattice ions. A lattice deformation can occur if the lattice ions will move from their original positions. The moving electron will permanently be surrounded by this region of lattice polarization and deformation. Moving through the crystal, the electron carries the lattice distortion with it.
The resulting lattice polarization acts as a potential well that hinders the movements of the charge, thus decreasing its mobility.
