SQL*XL updates: new entry in Add/Remove programs Quote:Whenever we update SQL*XL a new entry is added to the Add/Remove Programs from Windows control Panel.
Our update procedure is simply to execute the new SQL*XL setup program. Should we uninstall it first? How can we avoid getting duplicate entries for SQL(XL in the software list?
This is standard windows functionality. Whenever you install software an entry is made in the Add/Remove programs list. When you run an installer twice, two entries will be made in the list.
For SQL*XL updates I always suggest the following to my clients:
- Always uninstall the previous version of the software first from the Add/Remove programs section of the control panel.
When asked to removed ununsed shared components -
answer YES! - Then install the new version of SQL*XL in the same program directory.
The software will work fine when e.g. installed in a different directory or without uninstalling first. However the above procedure is the most clean way. Without uninstalling first unused dll's may be left on your computer. Installing in a different folder can create problems when you have created spreadsheets with links to SQL*XL (sqlxl.xla).
