Anisotropic displacement parameter

In X-ray diffraction crystal structures the anisotropic displacement parameter indicates the displacement of atoms due to temperature (vibration & rotations) but they are also an indication of the error in the measurements. In other words it is not only the thermal dislocation that but it also contains error values. It is called anisotropic because the displacement is not in all directions equally. The parameter is usually visualised by ellipsoids in the crystal structure.
