Raman effect

When light is scattered from a molecule or from a crystal, most of the photons scatter elastically. Those photons have the same energy as the incident photons. However, a small fraction of light (approximately 1 in 108 photons, depending on the cross section of the specific compound) may scatter inelastically, thereby changing the photon energy. This process of inelastic scattering of light is termed the Raman effect. [Thesis Daniele Fausti]
