Over the years he booked spectacular results. In the mid seventies he showed how the protein papaine does what it has to do. He showed furthermore that, replacing one of the approximately 3000 atoms, it all doesn't work anymore. That was shown in experiments but only after Van Duijnen's calculations one could also understand it.

Piet van Duijnen became internationally known. He published in important magazines. Due to his research he became known as ‘mister papain’ and ‘mister solvent’.
