Sudden polarisation

Sudden polarisation is the occurrence of a large intramolecular charge separation in the singlet excited
state of polyenes and their derivatives twisted about a double bond.

(At perpendicular geometry the overlap between the two p orbitals at the carbon centers is close to zero.)

Unsymmetrical substitution or geometrical distortion is effective in polarizing the system.
