Justification by faith or works

Does salvation come by faith alone or does it come by acting according to the convenants with God - works - In other words, does one need to demonstrate the reality of his faith?

In this the gospel of James and Paul seem to contradict. Paul says that you cannot be saved by works and James says that you cannot show that you are saved without works.

Perhaps they do not contradict at all. Paul says that a person is saved by faith alone. However by believing in God one may also act in accordance to God's law. Perhaps he meant that just good works is not enough to be saved.

It is interesting to read the comparison of John's and Paul's gospels. See e.g.:
