Microsoft SQL Server Express is the free version of MS SQL Server database system (see http://www.oraxcel.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1222592777). In its latest edition, MS SQL Server 2008 (see http://www.oraxcel.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1231150224).

SQL Server Express can be used for learning purposes. It can be used to build applications that can be deployed to most SQL Server databases.

There are three editions of SQL Server 2008 Express:

  • SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools
This is the core version of Express to support development and deployment.
It includes the core SQL Server database engine and SQL Server Management Studio Basic, a visual database management tool for creating, editing, and managing databases.
  • SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services
This edition adds more tools to the previous edition. It includes Full-text Search and Reporting Services, an integrated report creation.
  • SQL Server 2008 Express
Includes only the core SQL Server database engine.
