Installing Pervasive PSQL v10

Installing Pservasive PSQL v10 seems to be not an easy task.

Pervasive PSQL v10 can be downloaded from:
http://ww2.pervasive.com/Database/Trials/Pages/PSQLSummitv10TrialDownloads.aspx

First try:
Download: Pervasive PSQL Summit v10.10 Server for Windows (x86)
I downloaded this software for install on Windows 2000.
When installing it adviced me that service pack 2 or higher was required.
Installing service pack 2 it adviced me that service pack 3 was needed.
After installing SP3 it claimed that SP3 was not higher than SP2...

Second try:
Download: Pervasive PSQL Summit v10.10 Workgroup for Windows (x86)
I downloaded this software for installation on Windows XP.
When installing it adviced me:
Quote:
The detected version of Windows on the target system is Windows XP with Service Pack 0. Pervasive PSQL requires Service Pack 2 or higher on a Windows XP system.

Installing it on Windows XP SP2 did actually work!

Pervasive PSQL first use

Pervasive PSQL first use

After the installation the pervasive database engine is visible as a small icon in the bottom right of the screen. Double clicking shows only a message identifying the software as:

Database Service Manager for Workgroup Engine
Pervasive PSQL 10.13

In the start menu Pervasive created the following items:
  • Pervasive
    • PSQL 10
      • Engines
        • ...

      • Utilities
        • ...

      • Control Center & Documentation

The Control Center application is a tool to access the databases. To the right of the screen is a hierarchical list of database engines, databases, tables, etc.
To try it I opened the demodata database and in the tables list I saw that there is a billing table.
In the right side of the screen there is a link: Execute SQL Commands. It is here where I could execute a simpel select * from billing. To execute the SQL I right clicked where I could execute it to a grid or to text.

SQL*XL Pervasive connections

It is quite easy to connect with SQL*XL from Excel to Pervasive databases. To make it yet easier support for Pervasive databases were added to the SQL*XL connection wizard.
