Convert to Excel
To convert data to Excel is easy. For example using the SQL*XL software data from any database type can easily be converted to Excel. Simply run your query against the source database and receive the data into Excel. Some formats can natively be read into Excel such as csv and text files. For more structured forms of data - data from databases - a querying technique like used in the SQL*XL software needs to be used.
Convert from Excel
To convert data from Excel - a rather flexible data storage system - into other formats the data usually needs to be reorganised. To convert data into a database you need to organise the data in tabular format. In a database data is stored in tables and this organisation needs to be reflected in the spreadsheet. When the data is presented in tabular format it can be transferred from Excel to the database. The SQL*XL multiple rows insert feature can be used for this purpose.
If the database design is complex it may happen that not only data needs to go into one table but that a web of records needs to be inserted or altered. In that case I recommend to use a so called staging table - a new table that is only used to temporarily hold the data. When the data is in the staging table SQL or PL/SQL (TSQL) can be used to update the database.
Why not give SQL*XL a try today.
