Unix: Disk usage and disk capacity

The commands to view the disk usage is du. It takes as parameter the directory from which it should report. The option I prefer is the -h option to get human readable output. The command I frequently use is as follows. It reports in human readable form the disk usage of the current directory (.) and all subdirs:

du . -h

du . -sh :: summarises the results

du -sh * :: size of all files and subdirs

To retrieve the disk capacity use the df command. Also here the -h option gives the human readable output:

df -h
