 Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database system.
SQL Server is Microsoft's product in the marked for enterprise databases. It competes in the market with Oracle and IBM. SQL Server was cloned from the Sybase version 4.0 database in 1989. Sybase was renamed to Adaptive Server Enterprise.
There are different versions of the Microsoft SQL Server database. Old version indicators aer 4.2, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.0 OLAP, 2000, 2005 and 2008.
The 2008 offering comes in different flavors: Express, Express with advanced services, Workgroup, Standard, Enterprise, Developer, Web and Compact Edition (SQLCE).
In SQL Server a dialect of SQL is used, T-SQL or transact SQL.
A tool that you can use to connect to the Microsoft SQL Server databases is SQL*XL. SQL*XL uses Microsoft Excel as environment. SQL*XL directly connects from the spreadsheet to the SQL Server database.
