Quantum Mechanics
 
The postulates of quantum mechanics assert that microscopic systems are described by wave functions. These wave functions completely characterise all of the physical properties of the system.  
 
Each physical observable corresponds to a quantum mechanical operator that when applied to the wave function allows one to predict the possibility of finding the system to exhibit a particular value (or range of values, scalar, vector, etc) for that observable.
