Windows XP Pro has the facility to let others (or yourself!) remotely connect to your PC. To enable it go to system properties and enable the external desktop. Other people will be able to remotely connect to your computer now via the remote desktop utility. This is standard installed in Windows XP (all versions) and can also be installed for other versions of windows. I have downloaded a copy that I used for Windows 98 and that worked fine.
Command line use:
You can save remote desktops as files using the remote desktop utility however it may be handy to use this command line syntax:
mstsc /v:computername[:port]
the port number (default 3389) is optional
Note that on the host computer (the one that is to be taken over) the port number can be specified in the registry:
