Superposition principle
Superposition principle or the linear superposition of states. A quantum mechanical system which can take on discrete states ψn is also able to occupy the state:
ψ = Σnanψn
Another way to define the superposition principle:
State functions form an infinite-dimensional complex vector space. A postulate is that the eigenfunctions of a Hermitian operator for a complete set that can be used as a basis set for such a vector space. So any function in that space can be written as a linear combination of the basis functions.
