Windows slow opening file on network

Recently, opening files on some of my machines was very very very slow. Sometimes I had to wait 10-30 seconds before they would open. Terrible!

I found out the cause today! Recently I purchased a NAS and transferred most of my files onto it. See: http://www.oraxcel.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1178819917

I now rarely switch on the old PC on which the files were stored previously. This seems to be the cause of the problem! I noticed that when I have it switched on the performance is normal. When it is switched off opening files is slow.

I opened regedit and did a search for the unc path for the server, e.g. \\myserver. I then deleted all the entries I could find in the \\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT section of the registry.

After deleting all the entries I am experiencing the normal quick performance again!
