Scalar product of vectors
The scalar product of two orthonormal vectors a.b is a number. If a is a row vector or a 1xN matrix and if b is a column vector or a Nx1 matrix. The result of the product of an 1xN and Nx1 matrix is a 1x1 matrix or just a number.  
Using a vector product in Dirac notation this becomes:
<a|b> = aadjointb = Sum(i=1..N) a*ibi
