Top-down approach to Oracle database tuning:
 

  • External Review
    Review the external environment such as CPU, RAM, Network, Disk bottlenecks
     
  • Instance Review
    Review the Oracle instance such as find the Oracle top wait events
     
  • Tune instance
    Tune the instance. Determine the best log-term settings for statis initialization parameters
     
  • Tune objects
    Tune database objects such as tablespaces, tables, indexes, etc.
     
  • Tune SQL
    Optimize SQL execution plans.
