Compute speed in min/km and km/hour in Excel

Computing speed using Excel formulas is a bit tricky. Here is how to do it:

Enter the duration and distance in Excel cells:

A1: 01:35:00  -> this is the duration 1 hour and 35 minutes
A2: 17.5         -> this is the distance in km

To compute the speed in min/km simply use the formula:
A3: =A1/A2   -> the result is 00:05:26   (min/km)

To compute the speed in km/hour it is a little more difficult. Note that a time value is a fraction of a day. The value of 00:05:26 is actually 0.00376984. Using the formula =1/A3 Excel will display the value for km/day. We want km/hour so we need to divide additionally by 24 (hours/day):
A4: =1/(A3*24)

Note that you may need to change the cell format to a numeric value. Excel will probably use the time display format as a default because you used a time value as input value.
