Forward and backward slashes in Firefox and IE

Firefox handles backward slashes differently than Internet Explorer. This can lead to invalid links when browsing with Firefox. For example when I put a link to ..\projects\sqlxl this link is not valid in Firefox. Internet explorer finds the site without a problem. Curiously when you put the backward slashes into the address field in Firefox it replaces them by foward slashes...

As I am more a windows user now than a unix/linux user I tend to write my paths as: \\server\share\dir\file.txt. However when writing HTML files paths should be written as ../images/small/flower.jpg
