Insert in nchar column - ORA12704

Inserting a character into a nchar column can give the following error:

Error: ORA-12704: character set mismatch

The test table I am using is:
create table test ( nc nchar(1) );

The error happens when I run the following statement:
insert into test ( nc ) values ( 'A' );

The problem is resolved by prefixing the string with N:
insert into test ( nc ) values ( N'A' );

It seems that all wide strings or unicode strings should be prefixed with N.
Example: N'hello world'
