Manually updating files in setup disks (setup.exe)

This procedure describes how you can update a distribution made using setup.exe and setup.lst.

I use this distribution mechanism to distribute VB6 software. Through the package and deployment wizard (PDW) you can create a set of setup files. It is a hassle however to each time you make software updates to go through the whole procedure. Often the package and deployment wizard makes mistakes or there are other problems...

I adopt the following procedure for a hassle free update process:
1. the package and deployment wizard creates a support directory where all the files are kept that need to be distributed. Just copy the new version of the files in this directory.
2. Edit the setup.lst file. Change the file dates and the file versions of the files you have changed. This ensures the setup process can make the decision to updates any old files.
3. Run the batch file that the PDW created. It only runs the makecab utility to package the files into the cab file. Normally the new CAB is created in the parent directory. In this directory also the setup.exe and setup.lst files are kept.
4.  Now copy the setup.lst file you edited in the support directory to replace the setup.lst file in the parent directory.

Just distribute the new .CAB, setup.lst and setup.exe.
