AVS free AVG virus scanner alternative.

AVS free AVG virus scanner alternative.

Now AVG from grisoft will expire mid January 2007 I was on the lookout for another free virusscanner. I found one that is endorsed by AOL. Free too!

AVS: Active Virus Shield:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/

This is a completely free virus scanner. I worked with it for a couple of days and it seems absolutely fine. It does not slow down the PC and it is not obtrusive either.

An interesting companion product is the AOL Active Security Monitor.
You can download it from:
http://premiumservices.aol.com/asm_download/

Although the security monitor does not add anything to the security of your PC or network it will scan and highlight potential security risks. It also scans the security of the PCs regularly and notify you when the security level drops.

I am using the AOL AVS virus scanner and the AOL Active Security Monitor for 2 weeks now.

I found the AVS virus scanner to work very well. It does slow certain things down. I  noticed that after downloading a large file in IE there is a slowdown where I think AVS scans the new file. It is the step where internet explorer fetches the file from the IE temp files to the file location I chose. That was a little annoying but probably unavoidable. AVG did not cause this slowdown which makes me wonder now whether AVG actually scans a newly downloaded file.

The other day I received 3 virus emails. AVS was quick to detect it and it was cleaned even before I fetched the email into Outlook. No idea how it did that but it was good. I chose to delete 2 of the emails and quarantine one. A little later I deleted the quarantined one too. What I do not understand is why the 3 deleted emails keep appearing in the detected threats section.

Finally, the AOL Active Security Monitor usually alerts me just after I switch on the PC that the security score of my PC has dropped. It detected that my virus protection is not optimal. The virus definitions were not fetched yet. This causes the security monitor to alert me each day unnecessary. Hence I don't think I will run this security monitor for much longer. I will try to stick with it for a little longer though.

I mentioned the AVG virus scanner on the tomshardware.com forums site. I received the following reply which you may find interesting to read. AVG seems to be a cutdown version of Kasperski but lacking some more advanced features.

AVG didn't expire in Jan... it just got upgraded to a new version!. I still use the free version on my home machines. Works fine (just in case you want to swap back - get the latest free version from here http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 )
Thx

AVS stopped updating

I noticed that the AVS program stopped updating. I decided to investigate. I found that the settings files are in:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\AVP6\Data\aol-updcfg.xml
AOL update config?

Opening the file I noticed that it contains a list of update servers. Going manually to the first ftp update server the file daily-ec.avc could not be found. Since the list contains several ftp update sites I decided to remove the first ftp and http location and to try it again. I removed:
     <site2 url="ftp://download.newaol.com/avs/update/mirror/"      diff_url="diffs" weight="10000001" region="*" />
     <site2 url="http://download.newaol.com/avs/update/mirror/"      diff_url="diffs" weight="10000000" region="*" />

I saved the file and stopped and started the avs program by right clicking: exit and then starting it again from the start menu.

It updates fine again!
