Unable to insert some numeric values

Brian from the USA asked the following question.

Question:
I found that there were numeric values that were to be populated in number columns that were unable to be converted.  A work around was to set the columns up as varchar and the data was populated fine in the table.

Answer:
You have probably hit the problem that the defined size of the column in your table was not large enough to take the value in the spreadsheet. For example, if your number field was defined as number(2) and you try to insert the number 123, it will fail.
Converting the field to varchar will do the trick (provided that that is large enough too!) but you would be better off defining the field as number and to define it large enough.
