How to start a MSDOS prompt from Windows Explorer

Often it is desirable to drop to an MSDOS prompt to do certain tasks. When using the menu item from the start menu or when you run cmd.exe you always get a prompt in c:\windows. Many times you are exploring a different directory and changing directory to the path may be troublesome.

I found a simpel solution to this. Make the following change to the registry and a new item MSDOS Prompt will appear on the right click menu for a folder in Windows Explorer.
  • Open regedit.exe
  • Go to  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
  • Add a new key called CmdPrompt
  • Set the default value to MSDOS Prompt
  • Under the CmdPrompt key you just added, add a new key
  • Give the new key the name: command. Set the default value to c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
Note that it is assumed c:\windows is the path to your windows folder.

Starting batch files from UNC paths is usually not possible. You may find it useful to read the following article where is specified how DOS shells can run from a UNC path:
