How to disable the windows task manager

Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del on a computer will bring up the Windows Task Manager. This is often handy but is also a security risk. In this topic you can read how to disable the Windows Task Manager.

The Windows Task Manager can be used to view system processor and memory usage. This is harmless. It can also be used to stop programs or processes. This is already a bit more of a security risk. You can also use Windows Task Manager to start new programs. This is clearly a security risk if you want to lock down your PC.

To disable the Windows Task Manager, do the following:

  • Open regedit.exe
  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
  • If not already present, add a new key and name it System
  • If not already present, add a new DWORD and name it DisableTaskMgr.
  • Set DisableTaskMgr to a value of 1
