How do I use the security toolkit
06.04.06 at 10:24:10

SQL*XL user Jorma from Finland asked the following question.

Question:
When I use the Security Kit to make specific configurations for SQL*XL, do I have to reuse it allways sql*xl is uppdated? How do I deal with users using different versions of sql*xl?

Answer:
Please understand the issue and the workings of the security toolkit.

To use the security toolkit you need to use the version of the toolkit built together with the exact version of SQL*XL. This is a Visual Basic particular that I have not managed to find a solution for. I always provide the security toolkit on the CDROM so I can ensure the end user always gets the toolkit that belongs to the SQL*XL provided on the same CD.

You only need to install and run the toolkit on one PC only - a development PC. You do not install it on the end users PCs. On the development PC you use the tookit to make the configuration you require to be deployed on your end user's PCs.

You use the toolkit to make a security profile. The settings are saved to a file that you need to run on the end users PCs. That is the only thing you need to do to get the settings implemented on the end user's PCs. If you have different groups of end users that you would like to configure different settings for you just need to repeat the configuration and save it to another settings file.

Your end users do not need to run the precise build of SQL*XL as you needed to get the security toolkit to work correctly. That will work ok.

I have compiled a list of topics that are related to this one:

To explain the working of the security toolkit in more detail I have created a set of screen prints in the attached document. Let me know if anyone need further clarification.
