Using Oracle's XMLTYPE columns
15.12.05 at 14:51:50

Nigel from the UK asked the following question:

Question:
I am interested in getting XMLTYPE data into a spreadsheet. OO4O doesn't support XMLTYPE. I've tried using the "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle", which tells me that the data type is not supported by the driver.

Answer:
I can also confirm that ODBC has problems too.

The workaround that I found is not suitable to be integrated into SQL*XL easially. I therefore suggest you use the following workarounds:

To select XMLTYPE:
  Select sys.xmltype.getstringval( myxmlcolumn ) from mytable;

To insert XMLTYPE:
  Insert into mytable ( myxmlcolumn ) values ( sys.xmltype.createxml('<mytag>This is XML</mytag>'))

Reply from Nigel:
Would getClobVal() work too?

I checked it and yes that works fine too:

Select sys.xmltype.getclobval( myxmlcolumn ) from mytable;

There are more methods of the XMLTYPE object you can use. For a full list see:
